The first birdbottle is thought to have originated as early as 1699 in the colonial village of Williamsburg, Virginia. An archeological dig at the James Geddy house unearthed some of the first ceramic remnants and other documentation that show the birdbottle was an extremely popular item throughout most of the 18th century. The birdbottles' original purpose was not decorative but strictly functional as pest control. Fashioned from rejected ceramic jugs and a twig perch, the historical birdbottle would be placed near windows. Birds would then take nest and eat any nearby insects ensuring pest free colonial homes.
